Jacksonville, Florida is a boomtown located just a few dozen miles south of the border with Georgia. According to a 2007 estimate, nearly 800,000 residents live in the city. It's been a key geographical flash point in American history. During the Civil War, Jacksonville served as a major logistical center for the Confederates. Prior to that, it was ruled for a time by Spanish, the British, and even the French (way back in 1562!). In fact, 6,000-plus years ago, the location that was to become Jacksonville was populated by a group of Indians known by anthropologists as the Timucuas.

Today, Jacksonville is home to an amazing cultural life and a splendid skyline. Some of the biggest buildings in the city include the Bank of America Tower on Laura Street, which rises to a height of nearly 200 meters, the 163-meter Modis Tower on Independence Drive, and the 136-meter AT&T Tower on Pearl Street. Jacksonville is also home to some superb gardens and parkland. You can check out the recently opened Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens as well as the Kids Kampus for great nature adventures. If the urban stresses get to be too much, take a lunch under the Treaty Oak, an enormous tree in Dupont Park that's at least 200 years old.
